More than any other ethnic group, the Roma people have always been cultural mediators. Known as skillful acrobats, horse or bear trainers, dancers, singers and great musicians, owners of traveling circuses and carnivals, the Roma have greatly contributed to the formation of the cultural heritage of the areas where they have settled. Their inimitable music style has had a huge impact on major musicians such as Verdi, Liszt, Dvorák, Bartok, Brahms, and Rachmaninov. Romani dances have, admittedly, influenced flamenco (Spain), czardas and botolo tanc (Hungary), Chochek (belly dance) in Middle East and several folk dances that have striking similarities with folk dances from Punjab and Rajasthan, the original homeland of the Roma. Besides, many famous entertainers claim their partial Romani ancestry including Charlie Chaplin, Michael Caine, Yul Brynner and Bob Hoskins, while the Gypsy Kings are, admittedly, the most famous Roma musical entertainers globally.
Roma have profoundly influenced Middle Eastern music, Spanish flamenco, Hungarian instrumental music, jazz, and Jewish klezmer. But nowhere was their contribution as essential to the national musical tradition as in Russia. In the late 18th and early 19th century, Romani harmonic dominated the evolvement of little musical forms and fascinated the Russian composers, who based their writings on the romantic Romani theme making it a classic in the Russian musical literature.
The significant evolvement of Romani choral singing took place under the ruling of Peter the Great (1672-1725) when the Roma were employed as entertainers at courtly masquerades. In 1774, Count Alexis Grigorievich Orlov (1737-1808) organized the first Romani chorus from his servants under the direction of Ivan Sokolov and later, in 1807 he freed the artists, who became the first professional Romani chorus in Russia. The repertoire included mainly Russian folk songs, but they were performed with the unique Romani style that heightened their emotional tone. The Golden Age of Romani choral singing lasted until 1850.
Roma musical competence has been widely recognized in Roma orchestras. Large professional orchestras of Roma musicians originally appeared in mid-19th century, particularly in Hungary. According to historical evidence, the most famous Roma bands were led by Czermak, Ferenc Patikarus, Czinka Panna and Laci Racz. Musicians were often members of the same family giving rise to family dynasties of Roma musicians. Families that are still active today are the Lakatos, Balogh and Berki families that have earned international recognition.
Roma orchestras preserved their folk percussive and vocal music, but they have also adopted instruments and repertoire of non-Roma music creating a fascinating blend of flutes, violas, violins, cellos, and cimbalom (traditional chordophone). They composed songs based on folk roots like the nota, but they also created fast and rhythmic songs like the verbunkos or the czardas that overpowered the ethnic dances, waltz and polka, with their popularity.
Another major contribution of the Roma to the arts has been their theatrical performances. Although the first Roma choirs were formed in Russia in the 18th century, until the 1920s variety theaters and cabarets featured the lavishly exotic charms of Gypsy songs and dances, under the pseudo-art ‘Tsiganchtchina’.
In 1931, experimental theater was launched with many problems. Half of the Roma performers were illiterate and they had to learn their roles by constant repetition. They were clueless of how to perform dramatic art in its strictest sense and the absence of repertoire was evident.
However, the musical drama ‘Life On Wheels’ by Alexander Guermanov included an appeal on sedentarization and consequently to education, participation in the society and in the values of the world culture. With this theatrical piece, the Roma were able for the first time in their life to describe on stage using their mother language what was of utmost importance in their lives.
‘Bodas de Sangre’ by Federico Garcia Lorca was a significant theatrical event of both civic and artistic importance. The combination of Lorca, with his unique ability to feel anything that has a human appeal, and Mikhail Yanshin, an extraordinary actor and director of Moscow Art Theatre created an unimaginable result that moved the theatre beyond ethnographic themes.
The rest was a matter of time. ‘Carmen’ by Prosper Merimee, ‘Zemphira’ by Pushkin, ‘Grushenka’ by Leskov, ‘Makar Chudra’ by Gorki, ‘Esmeralda’ by Victor Hugo, ‘Masha the Gypsy’ by Tolstoy, ‘Olessia’ by Kuprin, all found their way to the stage and were excellently performed by Roma actors giving birth to a national intelligentsia and providing a training ground for dramatists and poets.
The soul of the Roma thrusts its roots into nomadism, which began with their exodus from India in the 11th century. This marked the beginning of their endless wandering around the world. And although their bare feet would be numerous times hurt and bleed, they were also advancing them to maturity and spiritual renewal.
