Iridescent shark with sailfin molly and black skirt tetra?
I bought a tank about a week and a half ago and after setting it up and cycling it for about a week I went to buy a couple fish. I ending up just getting two to start (a sailfin molly and black skirt tetra) but my dad, getting in to all this fishy business, went to the pet store to buy some cat food and came home with an iridescent shark.
He's not bothering the other two fish at all, and they're not bothering him but I'm worried that in the long run they won't get along especially now that I've read up on the size they can get to be!
Should they be okay, or should I find him a new home?
They will be fine. That particular "shark" is a catfish and is non-agressive. You will need a large tank to house the shark in however. Rule of thumb is for every inch of tropical fish, one gallon of water is needed. As these fish can grow a few feet in length, they are going to need a very large tank.
I am unsure of what your tank set-up is like, but make sure to have aquarium salt in the water and test your water fairly often. Mollys thrive more with the salt and nearly all tropical fish benefit from having aquarium salt in the water. This isn't going to make your tank a salt-water tank, it is a different type of salt. We suggest to all tropical fish owners to make sure to purchase a small container of the salt to start out. Each time the water is changed, more salt should be added.
A great place for you to go would be a local Petsmart as they color-code their fish. Dark green taged fish go with other dark green fish, light green do well with other light green. The only one's I suggest staying away from are cichlids for your tank. At Petsmart those will be the red tags. Easy to follow that system and get some lovely fish for your new tank.
